In this section of the M&A statistics, we collect and regularly update information on national deals as well as cross-border transactions from (outbound) and into (inbound) Canada. Announced M&A in Canada by Numbers & Value by Years

Since 1985, more than 63’413 mergers & acquisitions transactions have been announced with a known value of almost 3’689.7 bil. USD. In 2017, a new record has been broken in terms of transaction numbers with 3,512 transactions. 2007 was the all time high in terms of value with 366.2 bil. USD.

Announced Monthly M&A in Canada

In December 2017, 271 transactions with a value of 13.07 bil. USD have been announced. Compared with December last year, this represents an increase of almost +20% in terms of numbers. The month with the highest number of deals was May 2007 with 398 deals and the month with the highest value was June 2007 with a value of 73.26 bil. EUR.

The month with the highest frequency of deals is June with 5’156 deals which represents 9% of all M&A. February is the month with the lowest frequency with 4354 transactions which are 7.6% of the deals.

The month with the highest value of deals is June with 397.1 bil. USD of deals which represents 12.1% of all M&A transactions. And April is the month with the lowest value with transactions worth 200.7 bil. USD which are 6.1% of all deals.

Announced Quarterly M&A in Canada

Announced M&A in Canada by Industries (2000-2018)

The industry with the largest number of transactions has been Materials– representing 31% with a total number of over 13’700 transactions. The second most active acquirers are companies from Energy and Power with 6543 deals accounting for 14.7% of transactions. High Technology companies are the third most frequent industry in terms of consolidation with 12.1% of all deals. 

The industry with the largest M&A activity in terms of transaction value has been the energy and power sector – representing 26.3% of all deals with a total value of  740 bil. USD. Second most important industry by value is the materials sector with 680 bil. USD worth of transactions. The financial industry reached the third rank with 238 bil. USD of deals.
