It is very important to create a list of perceived synergy before starting due diligence. But this is often done during the valuation phase, which may come after Due diligence. We should have a list of synergies that we expect to achieve and test during DD whether those can be achieved or not. Do you have a successful example of doing this and how did the acquisition perform afterward?
For a recent M&A activity my organization did, they actually had a 3rd party lead a synergy retreat with leaders from both organizations to help them develop the list together so when we started begin able to engage in the work it would provide guidance to the teams of what synergies to look for and focus on in regards to the 30, 60, and 90 day plans. It was great in theory, but it was never actually shared with the people doing the work, so I don’t know if it would have helped with the success of the merger or not.
