Challenging the need for Functional Integration???

    Functional Area Integration seems to be key for achieving synergies and benefits, however one could challenge the need for functional area integration in all instances involving conglomerates, suppliers and entities that will still operate independently (for the most part). At the same time, if no synergies for a functional area have been identified, would there still be a need for functional integration?

    What are your thoughts on instances like these?
