This was from a specific deal where a family-owned business acquired another family-owned business. I had the opportunity to provide M&A Investment Banking services to the acquirer. A few months after the acquisition, the acquirer noticed that the target had made payments to certain accounts that were unfamiliar to them. These payments were not significant to the business and did not stand out during the Financial Due Diligence. The acquirer decided to stop paying their non-core suppliers, with the idea that if these suppliers were legitimate, they would eventually come forward to claim the payment. If not, the acquirer would achieve a cost reduction. After a few months, they cleaned up accounts they were unsure about, and since no claims were made, they ultimately increased their cash flow by doing this.
