My biggest takeaway from learning about M&A is that closing the deal is really just the beginning. The financial and strategic rationale may bring two companies together, but successful integration ultimately depends on people. Communication, culture, leadership, employee engagement, and change management can determine whether the expected value of the deal is actually realized.
Going through an acquisition myself has made this especially relevant. I’ve seen that integration is not simply about combining systems, policies, and processes. Employees need to understand what is changing, why it is changing, and what it means for them. Different groups also adapt at different speeds, so communication and leadership cannot be one-size-fits-all.
What I find most interesting is that a successful M&A integration is really a balancing act: move quickly enough to maintain momentum, but thoughtfully enough to bring people with you.

Agree that closing is the fun part of a merger or acquisition whereas integration is hard and often risky work. Securing business continuity on Day 1 is one thing but bringing 2 organizations together on a long term basis is the hardest part and can take many months if not years. This is why cultural awareness and change management activities are very important in order to guide employees and leaders through the different phases of change
