Going through an acquisition in the AEC industry has made me realize how quickly HR integration can influence the overall employee experience. While there is naturally a lot of focus on aligning benefits, payroll, policies, and organizational structures, employees are often more concerned about what the acquisition means for them personally.
Questions around job security, reporting relationships, benefits, compensation, and future opportunities can create uncertainty, particularly when decisions are still being made. In my experience, this is where communication becomes critical. Even when there is no final answer, providing regular updates can be better than leaving employees to fill in the gaps themselves.
In an industry where people, technical expertise, and client relationships are such a significant part of the company’s value, retaining key employees is especially important. For me, successful HR integration is ultimately about balancing the necessary process changes with maintaining trust and keeping employees engaged during the transition.
