    Afternoon All

I have been working in the automotive industry for the last 12 years, however I am wanting to broaden my knowledge in the M&A sector. Taking this IMAA course is the first step, however, what advice would you give to someone wanting to potential change job roles. What kind of job would be best to enter at?

Hi Daniel, I’ve worked as an M&A IT Consultant for approximately nine of the twenty-five years I’ve worked at Caterpillar Inc. I am one of two consultants who leads the IT & Cybersecurity Due Diligence & Integration & Divestiture Planning. We also have two M&A Cybersecurity Specialists & an IT Integration PM on our team.

My recommendation, based upon experience, is definitely play to your strengths – stepping into a role which leverages your 12 years of experience in the automotive industry. You have some options, of course, whether you work for strategic -or- financial (e.g. private equity) acquirer, or alternatively, a consulting firm which advises firms in M&A transactions.

Your path will likely be influenced by your formal degrees, training, and experience. For example, is your background in Finance, Marketing, Sales, Engineering, etc? You’ll be stronger candidate for roles which align to your background. The good news is that a person with functional experience & training, with some added exposure can ply these same skills in the context of M&A.

I agree with Mark – leveraging your prior experience can make you stand-out (in a positive way!).

Ask yourself the following: which major challenges do automotive customers/supplies face? Which famous automotive mergers were failures (or successes) and why? Which functions did you work in within the automotive industry (HR, IT, etc.)? These questions will help you develop your ‘niche’ areas of expertise that you can leverage in the M&A sector.

    Best of luck!
