Synergies for Engineering Firms: Where would you look first?

Engineering consulting firms have seem a lot of consolidation over the last 10 years. Personally, I think the first synergy that needs to be established when merging two engineering firms is the market/client base to prevent duplication – or creating a gap. What are the other places you would look first for synergies when combining two engineering firms? (Brand? Service types? Technology?)
