Integration Planning and Functional Engagement

    What is the recommended timeframe to read-in or engage functional SMEs? Is it poor practice/high risk to wait until the sign-to-close phase? If all functions are engaged during pre-sign phase, does that open up the possibility for info-leaks and loss of deal confidentiality? Does the risk of leaks outweigh the risk of incomplete planning due to late engagement?

    From what I have seen it is best to initiate as soon as possible. Using the same SMEs as you did on your diligence may help keep the total number of participants down. Overall, I believe the ability to plan outweighs the risk especially if you keep the team to your most trusted and professional individuals. I have seen our integration management office bring in the critical functions first HR, IT, Finance, Regulatory (clinical). The team can grow after closing.
