What are some effective strategies that you have seen work for managing cultural differences in cross-border M&A deals?

I have not personally been a part of a cross-border M&A deal, but my company was acquired by a Japanese conglomerate before I was hired. I can say that one thing that we currently have in place is an exchange program. At any given time we have a leader that is on assignment in one of their core sites and they have a leader here at our headquarters. I think this helps greatly to ensure a healthy relationship between parent and child company. The other thing is that they did not impose a lot of change. We represented a strategic opportunity for them to enter our market and recognizing that they allowed us to continue operations largely undisturbed.
