What are the key tasks that should be included during integration planning to ensure realisation of synergy benefits?

We have a WBS that is used for integration, it lists all the standard tasks as well as suggested tasks. What we have done to aid in the syngergy across our business units is to also have the RACI aligned with the WBS, this is the best way to clearly communicate the who does what, as well as the what needs to be done. This is an indirect way of building synergy as ownership is well defined.

    Hi Grace,

From my experience during integration planning, including Integration Blueprint development, from a synergy perspective you should have 4 main pillars:
1- review of the synergy plan: the team would assess the synergy case and score synergies in terms of their probability to caputure value (e.g.m revenue synergies would have lower scores given are more top-down, assumption based). You would need to review the source data that underpinned the synergies and how synergies are linked to initiatives
2- refinement of synergy plan: you would prioritise the synergies that are more robust in terms of value creation case and clearly defined the initiatives that will get you there. here you need to quantify benefits and phasing
3 – define an execution roadmap: this is where synergies are transformed into initiatives and linked into Day 1, Day 100 checklists or long lead time items
4 – execution – classic PMI where accountability for synergy initiatives is key; KPIs need to be defined; baseline understood and source data defined to track KPIs

I will add that within the Integration planning, for synergies you need to:
    – establish raponsibilities early
    – front load plans as much as possible to truly capture value
    – have a defined and agreed baseline (so synergy benefits can be actual quantified)
    – track anbd reward results
