ABB was founded in 1988 as a result of the merger between the Swedish company “Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget” (ASEA) and “Brown Boveri LTD”, which concentrated their business in Zurich and each held 50% but remained independent companies. Later in 1999 they got finally unified as ABB Ltd.

Electrification Products (Low- voltage circuit breakers, switches, control products, wiring accessories, enclosures and cable systems to protect people, installations and electric equipment from electrical overload),
Discrete Automation and Motion (Products and services for industrial production. It includes electric motors, generators, drives, power electronics and industrial robots),
Process Automation (Systems for control, plant optimization, and industry-specific automation applications. The industries served include oil and gas, power, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, pulp and paper),
Power Grids (Key components for the transmission and distribution of electricity. Networks for transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, cables, and associated high voltage equipment, digital protective relays. It also offers maintenance service),
Corporate and Other (Management and functioning of the company, asset management and investments).

Since 1999, ABB has engaged in a number of technology M&A deals: 121 Transactions with a value of USD 12.64 bil. (for number and value per year, see figure below).
